Jesus’ Establishment of His Law

3 Nephi 12:1 – 13:24

Having commissioned the twelve, Jesus turns to the crowd, and delivers to them an adapted version of the Sermon on the Mount.

And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto Nephi, and to those who had been called, …


…and behold, he stretched forth his hand unto the multitude, and cried unto them, saying:

Jesus then turns to the twelve, and reminds them to trust in God’s care.

And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he looked upon the twelve whom he had chosen, and said unto them:

3 Nephi 14:1–27

Jesus turns back to the crowd, and continues his sermon.

And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words he turned again to the multitude, and did open his mouth unto them again, saying:

3 Nephi 15:1

Jesus explains that he is teaching them the same things he taught the people in Israel before his death and resurrection.

And now it came to pass that when Jesus had ended these sayings he cast his eyes round about on the multitude, and said unto them:

“Behold, ye have heard the things which I taught before I ascended to my Father; therefore, whoso remembereth these sayings of mine and doeth them, him will I raise up at the last day.”

3 Nephi 15:2–15:10

Reacting to some people’s confusion regarding the law of Moses, Jesus explains that he is the new law, that the law of Moses is obsolete, and all should look unto him for salvation.

And it came to pass that when Jesus had said these words he perceived that there were some among them who marveled, and wondered what he would concerning the law of Moses; for they understood not the saying that old things had passed away, and that all things had become new. And he said unto them:

3 Nephi 15:11–16:20

Jesus again turns to his disciples and teaches them about the house the Israel, “other sheep,” latter-day apostasy, and the fulness of the gospel.

And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he said unto those twelve whom he had chosen:
