Satan's wicked oaths are full of deceitful irony. Of course, he does not have them swear "by the devil and also by his despicable underworld and also by his loathesome disembodied helpers." Who would want to swear by such a miserable lot? No, it sounds much better if you swear by wonderful things like God and heaven. Yet, those who enter these secret combinations will never be with God nor will they ever experience heaven. Of his own people, Mormon commented on this irony by saying, they had sworn by all that had been forbidden them (Mormon 3:14). See also commentary for 3 Nephi 12:34.
