The subordinate conjunction that here in Ether 8:11 means ‘with the result that’. Even so, its use here seems strange to modern English speakers. In this context, modern English speakers expect so that (which is fairly frequent in the Book of Mormon text). It is possible that so was accidentally dropped from the text here in Ether 8:11. For an example where so was omitted early in the transmission of the text, see under 1 Nephi 15:20; yet there are no examples where so that has been reduced to simply that. Ultimately, there is nothing incorrect about the resultive that in the Book of Mormon text; wherever it is supported by the earliest text, the critical text will either maintain or restore it (as the case may be).
