Mesoamerica had no furnaces to provide heat for buildings, so this description is simply of a large fire. The Three Nephites were protected from the flames as were Nephi₂ and Lehi₄ (Hel. 5:23–24) and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-nego (Dan. 3:16–26).
