We cannot continually pray verbally throughout the day, for we have work to do; however, within our hearts there should be a constant communion with our Heavenly Father, giving thanks and seeking fulfillment of our righteous desires. Amulek confirms this opportunity for silent and ongoing prayer with these words: “Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you” (Alma 34:27). Prayer is truly communicating with Heavenly Father through and in the name of His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. Heavenly Father hears and answers prayers. He knows the thoughts and intents of our hearts. Our heart is the center of our soul; along with our mind, it is the decision- and affection-center of our being. Consequently, when our hearts are drawn out in prayer, we truly have our minds centered on the things of the Lord and the welfare of our fellowmen (see Mosiah 24:12; Alma 34:27; D&C 19:28). Our thoughts and prayers should always be focused on God as we strive to do His will.
