“Separated into Twelve Bodies”

Brant Gardner

The presence of twelve men representing God and twelve physical groupings must have had some religious significance, probably the twelve tribes of Israel. Not all twelve were represented in the immigrants to this promised land, and this division would almost certainly have followed kin lines in some way. The twelve themselves represented “whole” Israel. The divisions of the people followed the symbolism of the twelve as they were not themselves representatives of the each of the tribes of Israel.
