At the end of the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew, Jesus comes down from the mount and begins healing. In the New World, Jesus does not change his location. A brief topical transition summarizes that they have “heard the things which I taught before I ascended to my Father.” While parts of the Sermon on the Mount would have required some cultural adaptations (not preserved in our text), it presents a concentrated overview of how the gospel relates to the law of Moses and how Christians are to lead their spiritual lives. Jesus has provided these core teachings to his disciples in both locales.
The final sentence of this transition recaps the purpose of the final section of the Sermon on the Mount. Just as we are to build on the rock of the gospel, not on sand, we are to remember and do the things that Jesus had just taught.
