The way the Sermon on the Mount appears in the present King James Version would indicate that the entire sermon was given either to the whole world or to the Savior's chosen disciples only, depending on the interpretation placed upon Matthew 5:1-2. However, the Book of Mormon indicates that although most of the sermon was intended for the multitude, at least a portion of it was intended only for the chosen leaders. In the New Testament there is no break between the teachings "Ye cannot serve God and mammon" and "Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life," etc. (Matthew 6:24-25.) However, in the Book of Mormon the Savior pauses between these two statements, turns from the multitude, and speaks only to "the twelve whom he had chosen." (3 Nephi 13:25.) The next ten verses are directed only to these chosen leaders.
