In the New Testament, particularly in Mark, Jesus is rather reticent about his identity as the Messiah and the Son of God. Here, by contrast, the first words out of his mouth are to introduce himself as the Messiah, or the Christ. He proclaims that he is the fulfillment of prophecy, which would have been significant news to the Nephites, who had heard many prophecies of this Christ who would one day come.
