“They saw a Man descending out of heaven.” Tribes of ancient America believed in Quetzalcoatl, whose name means “bird-serpent.” He descended out of the sky like a bird, and he was as the serpent raised up on a pole to heal the people (see further in commentary at Alma 33:19–20).
Jesus’ descent to the Nephites provides a pattern for how he will come at his second coming. When he ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives after his resurrection, two angelic witnesses said: “Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven” (Acts 1:11).
