These verses predict the Messiah’s death and resurrection. The emphasis is not on death, however, but on his pending change of location. The death is a transformation, just as the “corn of wheat” (seed) dies (is planted in the earth) and comes forth in new life and a different state. It is in that change that the earthly Messiah will be glorified (“the hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified”). Jesus, the earthly Messiah continues to glorify the name of the Father in Heaven, as is appropriate for his current earthly state. However, in recognition of the Messiah’s coming death and resurrection, the Father notes that Jesus’s earthly actions have already glorified his name (“I… have glorified it”) and that the resurrection will add further glory (“will glorify it again”).
