The time period of twenty-two years describing the civil defense against the probability of war seems to be an addition to the previous twelve years of peace. The estimated dates in the lower right hand corner of the Book of Mormon pages considers it that way although the text does not make it clear. Their tilling of the ground and the production of clothing not only brought peace and prosperity, but they were done in keeping with the commandments given to Adam and Eve after being driven out of the Garden of Eden “to eat his bread by the sweat of his brow, as I the Lord had commanded him. And Eve, also, his wife, did labor with him” (Moses 5:1, see also Genesis 3:23–24).
