“Are We Not All Beggars?”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

As all are dependent on the nurturing help of others, so all are required to extend those same blessings to those in need. Greatness is found in the ability to give, not in the strength to take. “He that is greatest among you,” Christ declared, “shall be your servant” (Matthew 23:11). Without service there is no greatness.

“Are We Not All Beggars?”

All are indebted to others. None can work out their salvation alone. None can give birth to themselves, nurture themselves as children, remit their own sins, or call themselves forth from the grave in a glorious resurrection. Indeed, there has never been a soul whose life has not been enriched by others, who has not reaped where he did not sow, pluck where he did not plant, and enjoy that for which he did not labor.
