King Benjamin said that the rich should give to the needy, and the poor should not covet. We often think of coveting only as desiring something someone else has, but basically coveting is setting one’s heart on the things of the world more than on the things of God. Martin Harris was warned against coveting his own property (see D&C 19:26).
We can even be guilty of coveting or holding back what we haven’t received (see Mosiah 4:25). Coveting is an attitude toward material things, whether they belong to someone else, whether they are our own possessions, or whether they are just material things in general.
