Again we see the distinction between blood lines (Jacob) and covenant (Israel). God would like both to hear Him. But it is Israel who is “called” because the name of Israel was given as a new name in a covenant relationship. He would like all to receive Him, but only covenant people will do so. Many still are hard of hearing however, and therefore need God to admonish them to “hearken” unto Him. We all should willingly listen to Him. Too many times we will not. Sometimes we begrudgingly do so. He would like to see alacrity. Mercifully He is willing to accept our poor offerings.
If we were eager to follow Him, we would be the beneficiaries of that enthusiasm. Rather than a burden, we would find “rest” in such a choice. He would like us to acknowledge Him as the “first and last” because He is. The creation began with Him, and final judgment will be done through Him. He originated the plan, implemented it, sustains it, and will conclude it with judgment in the end. In all things from the beginning He is the author and finisher of the work. In reminding us of this, He is trying to reorient our thinking to the truth. Unless we have this concept of Him, we cannot acquire the necessary faith to be saved.
